  • more performance, anyone?

tyan is releasing 4- and 8-processor mainboards for dual core opterons

oem only, but i guess sooner or later you'll see them for sale

    http://www.tyan.com/products/html/thunderk8qe.html

the normal version has 4 cpu slots and 16 DDR Sockets for up to 64GB of registered ram (even non-ecc)

if you need more power, you can add an extention board for another 4 cpus and another 16 ddr slots

i wonder what kind of power supply you'd need for 8 dual core opterons + 128GB of ram

found a system for sale that uses a similar board

3 redundant power supplies (+1 backup in case one would fail)
      5 fans (4 12cm fans at 4000upm and one 6cm fan at 6000upm)
probably sounds like a jet at takeoff
4 handles for carrying it (68kg)
      slots for 6 hotswappable drives
