      If only Max would be ported to Linux! I don't want fancy icons and a fancy gui for my OS; only for the apps. The OS should be a simple portal to run programs from. Ah, well thanks goes to Autodesk for screwing us. Funny thing is the original founders of Autodesk believed in running their software on different OS's but that changed when they left and Carol "money rulez" Bartz took over.

          afaik avid editing systems won't run on linux
          btw: i really didnt like avid on the mac - not because of the avid software (which is great) but because of the mac os9 instability

          in my experience, linux isnt necessarily faster than windows - has anyone of you ever worked on a bloated suse linux desktop?

          kde can be pretty sloooow, too
          and i guess max would need some kind of window manager unless autodesk was willing to write their own (like the guys who wrote shake)

            its not the speed of linux we are all loving its the fact that there are no limitations like max. no connection limitations, no ram limits, etc.

                i think cpnichols post answers my original question perfectly
                thanks a lot for that
                i didnt want to go into an MAC vs PC war but was probably unavoidable
                for me personally this technology means that you can combine the best of both worlds in one machine and thats all i m interested in
                plus i m a big gadget / design freak and always wanted to have a mac simply cos they look good
                regards

                  Just keep in mind, as you know, that the speed is all about the Intel procesor (which is now available on most laptops) and not the Mac.

                  Interesting side notes. That Laptop is around the same speed as an AMD 4200 or 4400, and around 50% faster then an Pentium D processor.

                    Also worth noting that the windows based laptops are about $500-$1000 cheaper for the same basic setups as the macbooks

                      Yeah but you don't get a keyboard that lights up, a apple that glows, and a personal kiss from Steve Jobs

                            yeah. the cases do look nice and fancy. maybe i can hang out behind a mac repair store and find a discarded case and fill it with rocks and use it as a paperweight (sounds like the same thing people do with their macs that have all the components inside..use is as a paper weight. my brother used his mac as a dvd player and jukebox. the rest of his work was done on his pc's hehe

                                well....
                                this is more likely:
                                http://configure.us.dell.com/dellsto...=E1705S4&s=dhs
                                $ 1,796
                                vs.
                                http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPL...nNB9sME/2.?p=0
                                $ 1,999.00

                                note:
                                in this sunny side tip of the europe prices tend to vary a little from everywhere else...and taxes really cut our rists and throughts, so this is only to try to make a point....the price gap is now very narrow when u compare similar products!
                                and u can t neglect the design arousment....i would never fell proud to show up the dell around... ....or could i?hummm
