  • x64 and DWG linking woes...

Yes, another win x64 thread ...

I was setting up a new machine (dual 270's with 2gb ram) and had hoped to install x64 to future proof it a little once I up'd the ram a bit. I set everything up, did a few test renders, everything was working fine with VIZ 2005 (based on Max 6). I then tried to update a DWG linked file from autocad and it bonked me. It gives an error about "MICROSOFT VISUAL C++ RUNTIME ERROR .... ABNORMAL PROGRAM TERMINATION" (I don't have the error in front of me right now). I then tried just a clean new VIZ file and tried to link a simple CAD file of a cube; same error. After a lot of searching on Autodesk's website and the net and finding nothing, I was forced to just reinstall plain XP and set everything up that way.

Can anyone else running x64 confirm this on their system? If need be I can upgrade to VIZ 2007 but probably not to MAX 8. Has anyone else on Win x64 encountered any other problems running VIZ/MAX?

    Thanks,
    David

The file link manager (which shows up in Max7 I believe) might perform better than XREF when dealing with 64bit.

The File Link Manager is what I'm using (i.e. DWG Linking) and it's been around since at least VIZ 3 but maybe not in MAX until later. Perhaps a later version of VIZ/MAX might help though in x64 but I'm hoping someone can confirm this. Regarding the use of XREF's, I think you can only xref MAX files, not DWG's. Thanks though.

I haven't tried 'updating' a linked file, although I use file link manager extensively on Max8 on XP64. I'm in the middle of a big render at the moment, but when it's done I'll take a look. I haven't had the error you're describing.

That's good news with Max8/x64 and is encouraging that if I upgrade to VIZ 2007 I may be in luck. I have a spare drive so perhaps when I upgrade I'll just plop in the new drive and test it out with x64, rather than wiping the drive clean. Thanks.

The clean drive sounds like a very good idea to me, makes it easier to swap back and forth to test things.

I would recommend putting a demo of Max8 on there to compare to viz2007 if you can. I find that most of the Viz-specific features are a waste anyways when dealing with VRay, and with Max you get some nice feature enhancements like particle systems.

Unfortunatley upgrading to MAX instead of VIZ is another $2000 rather than $500 so we'll see . I should have also mentioned that some people on the max discussion group had the same problem with MAX 7 but no one had any solutions there. There was no mention of it with 8 though.

i had issues with file linking with max 7.5 on xp64
                I havent tried max 8 on xp64.
Hopefully it gets sorted soon, its the last thing holding me back from going to 64bit
