  • Wavgen texture loader

    Ahoy there mateys

Any of you chaps using the wavgen texture loader for max Had a
look on their website and downloaded the demo but you can only use the
bitmaps they supply, can someone tell me what its actually like to use in
an actual job, workflow, learning curve, does it work well with vray
and is it worth the brass i'll be paying for it

Main question, does it cure this cpu usage problem with large bitmaps
having a total mare with this at the mo.

    cheers
    steve

afaik, the wavegen texture loader doesn't help with cpu load but with memory load
some compression formats (jpeg 2000 and ecw f.e.) allow you to load only portions or lower res versions of the image into memory
the wavegen loader does that inside max
it only loads the necessary data/resoloution and saves a ton of memory
you can check that with the image they supplied
if i remember correctly, it was larger than 2k and the memory usage was still very low

btw: the guy was Paul Buckland and he said it works great (he used it with jpeg2000 textures which he saved from photoshop)

ps: of course the lowered memory load can have a huge effect on render-times, especially if you are working with lots of large textures
