i installed linux fedora on one of my systems so i could use it as a server. however im getting weird things.
a: on installing it wouldnt let me use vfat which is supposedly the file system to use if i want windows to see it
b: although i downloaded 5 iso files and burnt them, on installing it only used the 1st 2 disks. strange.
c: ive setup my network adapter and i can now see my windows computer but they cant see the linux machine and also when i set a static ip address i lost my internet capabilities. usually the adsl modem on my windows machines i just set to 10.0.0.1 in the gateway no luck in fedora

the linux file system has nothing to do with the system that's exposed to windows
i'd suggest using a native linux one (ext3 or reiserfs f.e.) and then to install and configure samba
then you'll also see the linux machine on your windows workgroup
        samba faq:
        http://samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/
there are easier install guides though

ps: i guess the 3 other discs contain additional software that you didnt choose to install
ps2: cant help you with the network adapter, the machine i installed samba on was already running linux in a network

        cya,

        Mike

ive got samba up and running but im having 2 problems. when i configure my network card like this i loose internet settings. usually on my other computes i set the fixed ip address then i set 10.0.0.1 as a gateway to access the modem attached to the network switch. this isnt working in linux. also when i set it up for modem access i loose network access and cant see the other systems. as for samba. its running, but i still cant find my linux box from my winxp machines. on the xp machines it asks me to log in when i use the password im using for over on the linux box to log in, it doesnt give me access

I think your gateway HAS to be on the same subnet as your computer (ie. 192.168.0.*) I know our router wont let me specify a gateway outside our subnet.

i was able to access the linux box, but i had to manually type in \\192.168.0.100 to be able to see the folder i setup for sharing on the linux box. it asked me for log in info though with username and password. id much rather it didnt since that could potentially mess me us with my network rendering im sure. right now internet isnt a really big thing on my list of things for the linux box. i just want it as a server. however this is how i setup my winxp machines for internet as well as for networking.

it wont ask you for a password if you make the share open for anyone (via the config file) or if you use the same samba login/password as on your windows machine
