Ahah, update about maxwell not rendering photorealism.
Reading through this post, it seems the new and "improved" v1 has just a different tonal mapping, one that favours expansion of the whites against precision in the darks.
Pity is, it's MILES off the photographs it should replicate with absolute fidelity (with the NL and A-team people warning: "Reality has a a billion billion variables we can't replicate": like it's the user's fault not to get the fact in his mind:the poor sods who believed the marketing hype are now being flipped over to be cooked on the other side too, but nvm.).
So it cleans faster by applying a different gamma to the pixels, hence darkening the low contrast areas (the most difficult ones along with the brightests spots, which incidentally still exhibit loads of noise), or is it purely my impression?

Dmitry, or anyone with experience on maxwell?

You are correct. And to be honest, I havent even bothered installing maxwell v1... Im one of those who are true to beta. However, I stoped using even that, after the implementation of gamma space in vray.
NextLimit, all they have left is to defend their now useless renderer. I see their developers comenting "wow" or "this is great" on images that look...
                        pathetic.

I kept on reading, and besides the horrible horrible mood, and the paranoid (with reason!) cyclic return to the core issue, i had to snatch this one sentence from an important A-Team member.

Yes, (omitted), your comment is at the heart of what's being tested here - it's not a rendering of reality, but a rendering of photographed reality.
This indeed leads down a very dangerous mindset.
I could write the perfect renderer for a black-only shooting camera.
                            PitchBlack the codename.

Btw, there are some really nasty characters in there... Like frustrated people who don't manage to make their deadlines.
