  • ChaosSquid - lets set it up!

Thought we could discuss how this'll work if anyones interested.

    For what its worth my idea is to;

get some space (that seems to be the easy bit)
Setup the FTP server with multiple users.
Generate a new password for each user upon request.

    logs can be checked weekly....

I'm not well versed in the world of networking so if anyone see's a problem with this please fill me in

    cheers,

    f

I think its a cool idea. It needs linking from the members part of the forum, so as the warez monkeys dont get there grubby hands on any of it....
So what are you thinking, say to gain access to the whole FTP site, you would have to upload an item/s, like an entry fee.
Or would you do it, to download an item, you would need to upload an item/s.?

I am wondering if it wouldnt be better to have a browserbased interface to it instead of FTP...ftp is hard to categorise/search....ftp is damn nice for mass downloading of a lot of files or big files (resume etc), but that´s not exactly what we´re aiming for, eh ? :P

What would you guys think about a web-based download center ? with proper user handling, profiles etc...access would be done via pm on the board, so we can assure only legit users get access.

      Still thinkin,

        JOW

        not sure -
It could just be a shared resource (not very capitalist of me) - of which joining would involve an upload. Thereafter it would be up to the user. Perhaps a chart with users and how much they've uploaded/downloaded so everyone can see. I think that'd do it.

This way the global learning/quality curve would go up significantly for us as a community.

        just a thought!

I just think that what would make it special would be the open resource quality. I think that if setup properly people would respect it, and view the sharing of quality content as a form of kudos - a bit like image uploads. Upload crap and get noticed!

Yeah i think an up-load to join is the way to do it

Thorsten, how easy would your idea be to setup then? im liking it

well there is loads of upload/download php scripts out there...am in the progress of evaluating some of them as i type :P It is not really more setup involved then with setting up a dedicated ftpd, but it sure a lot easier to use and maintain/admin/moderate

What would be the object of share?
Models, scene setups, scripts, tutorials, what?

Sounds good to me, if the content can be kept well in check for both quality and source of the material.

everything i´d guess, or any objections ? Content will of course be checked, and can also be user rated i´d say. Eventually not so good stuff can still be kept in a seperate category for misc and noobs ?

It might be worth searching on some php sites for a usefull script.

                        Edit...sry, just read instincts post

INSTINCT - sorry for the delay in my reply.

I think a browser interface would be ideal - although im not sure how to implement. If people are willing to put some work into this then thats great. I'll help where possible....

                            Sounds like a great idea!!

Although i have seen and used alot of ratio based FTP sites.. and they just dont work.
People around here are helpfull and generous enough to upload stuff anyway, i dont see a reason to force people to do so. As long as its all kept withing legit vray users i think it should be open.

Just dont post any links here in the forums as warez monkeys can see all

Must be quality stuff. And somebody will have to review. This is the trouble with the automated scripts.

Can't we do this with a password protected forum? I offered mine up before - but old UBB pearl script is not the greatest. Make threads per content? Multipule Admins? Don't know how to track uploads and all that business.

And again, I'll host any back-end private site we want, but I don't want to be the full time file manager.
