  • script to delete duplicate surfaces?

Is anyone aware of a maxscript to delete duplicate surfaces? I use sketchup a lot for modeling, and it happens sometimes when I'm fast modeling that I'll overlap a component or 2 here and there, and end up with duplicate surfaces which as we all know, turn out a nice black in the render

SO a maxscript to detect duplicate objects would be most richeous!

I found this one on scriptspot... got it running, but never seemed to find any of my coinciding geometry... everything needs collapsing into editable mesh - and I think it will only find faces that share all points.

you can set the secondary ray bias to 0,001 - under global switches, to "remove" the double polys in the renderings

but does it work for animation?

Well... we all know it... best option is to model without Coinciding Geometry... ...

Setting the secondary ray bias to 0,001 does not always do the trick, and no not great in anims.

Dont know if 1.5 has improvements here

I have had trouble with coinciding faces EVEN with secondary ray bias to 0,001 or greater.

Normally as flicker or dark patch, which dissapeared after hunting down and deleting the bugger..

              BUT... might just be me

so to sum up, model without Coinciding Geometry :P

.001 will remove some light leaks you will have.

THanks all for responding. I'll try that script. I searched scriptspot, and couldn't find anything. Wrong keywords I think. Of course, I always try very hard to not have double faces, and I never model with overlapping faces. It's just when you're under pressure, with little time, it happens. Just would be nice to have a clean way of finding them.

We just completed 3 rapid animations where a model (of sorts!) was supplied to us with lots of duplicate faces. We didn't have time to remodel the whole thing so used the ray bias as mentioned above. Seemed to work pretty well for us.
                      Kind Regards,
