  • What you think of Detail Enhacement ?

    I find it quite useful with GI caustics and VRay Light Mtl, as you don't need high Irrmap settings for the QMC quality

    Here's quick comparesion.

    Irrmap set to Low, DE=on
    (DE->Detail Enhancement)

    Irrmap=Low
    DE=off

    Irrmap=High
    DE=off

    QMC (first and secondary)
    12 subdivs + 3 bounces

    I just can't seem to trust myself
    So what chance does that leave, for anyone else?

          I don't get it. The top image with IRR/DE is 1m 21sec and the QMC is 1m 14sec.

          How is the DE faster?

              At the default settings it seems pretty slow in my tests, haven't tested beyond turning it on and canceling the renders though.

              I imagine it can be optimized a bit

                For such simple scenes, there isn't much point in using the detail enhancement, as QMC GI does the job very well in these cases.

                It is really useful for more complicated scenes (like interior renderings) where you want the small details from the QMC GI, but don't have the time for it.

                From my experience, good settings when using the detail enhancement are Medium preset for the irradiance map but with Interpolation samples set to 50, and more or less default settings for the detail enhancement.

                Best regards,
                Vlado
