  • x64 benefits?

What are the real benefits of x64.

Is the main purpose of x64 OSs is that it allows for larger amounts of memory? Anything else besides having to install more memory?

well, i would imagine you need a 64bit OS to run 64bit software, including max and vray. obvious answer i suppose.

Yes, more memory is the main advantage of 64-bit architectures. Seeing as how many scenes nowadays are several million polys at least, 64-bit is the way to handle them efficiently.

So is x64 pretty much useless unless you go above 4 gigs?

Vlado, is there any possible perfomance increase ?
I just can't seem to trust myself
So what chance does that leave, for anyone else?

Even if you have less RAM that 4 GB, it is still useful to have a 64-bit architecture. This is because the OS is still able to allocate more than 4 GB for the application, even if it has to swap to disk.

To be perfectly honest, I haven't noticed (drastic) speed increases. On the one hand this is good - at least it is not slower . On the other hand, maybe compilers are not yet taking full advantage of the architecture.

normally when my normal work station crashes on a render i just send the render to my 64bit BOXX and forget about it since i know the boxx can handle it easily
