  • render farm with XP 64 & 4 gb ram or better

I'm in a bit of a bind currently. I need to rent some processing power that can handle a file that uses almost 3 gigs of RAM. I have tried to optimize but this is as good as I can get it. My 6 dual opteron machines breeze through the frames (about 7 min frame times), but my older 32 bit machines (even w/3 gig switch enabled) run out of memory. I probably need the processing power of at least 4 more dual core machines to get the animations finished by Monday. If you can help me out, or know someone who can, please PM or email me.

I have tried a couple commercial render farms in London already, but they only have 32 bit machines, and they are not able to render the file.

Also, I am on Max 8.3 with Vray 1.5 RC2

    Cheers,

    Aaron

    VizRender Farm

Know posting late but for future reference. Pretty sure our farm can handle it, dual processor dual core 4gb. Check link...

In India though....drop me a line if anyone is interested

        3GB Switch

Did you need a 3GB switch when running XP64? I ask because I have XP64 and it seems to see all 4GB of RAM and I didn't change the boot.ini. This makes me assume XP64 will see all the RAM. I tried to add the line to the boot.ini, but it wouldn't boot.

we're trying out this new renderslave running a 64bit processor, 8 gigs of memory and running windows server 2003 R2. This flavor of windows can apparently use 32gb of memory, yet when rendering, I can't get it above 4 gigs. Im currently assuming its because max isn't 64bit yet. But I also cant fathom a single process using 32gb of memory.

You probably could have said the same thing about 4GB just a few years ago !! I agree with you about the 32gb for now, but times change. Interestingly, I started on Softimage with 64mb of ram and we were considering upgrading it to an unheard of 128mb (at least in our office at the time). I believe this was about '95 or '96. At the same time we heard talk about an sgi onyx running 1GB ram and we just couldn't fathom how they could cram that much memory into a machine, actually use it all, and what it was need for.

Its not just that. I forward thinking enough for what your saying. Im wondering how that much volatile memory being used at the same time is even safe. Already, memory gets VERY expensive at higher limits because the quality of the memory has to be remarkable. Imagine 32gb of memory.

                RAM

I watched a video clip showing off the 64bit OS and they were talking about terabits of RAM being supported under Vista64

is that per process though? not alot of applications out there really that needs that much memory PER process.
