Heh no.
They are 'geometry' imported from other apps and come in like a phantom object. You can see them, even select them but you cannot do anything with them - even convert. Sometimes they are movable but moving one often affects other instances. So if you slide one in one direction 10 others will fly off in different axis. And if you delete one, other ones throughout a scene will disappear - which is bad on a large scene if you have to go hunting around for things that disappeared. It makes editing a near impossibility.

speaking of strange data imports, have you ever imported anything that comes in as a "poly object"?
We imported some car geometry and it came in that way but although it had all the edit options of a editble poly it had smoothing although no smoothing groups were identified and if you put any kind of modifier on it the smoothing groups were totally lost.
