  • Modo anyone

I am going to a modo demo on Thursday night at RFX in Hollywood, my brother (my real brother not a friend I call brother) went to one last night at MGLA and he was pretty impressed.
Is anybody using Modo ? What are your thoughts? - I'd like to have a bit of background before I go - everything looks so great in demo's - shit I've even been fooled by some new max features

I really like it for poly modelling and it makes uv mapping easy.

Haven't tried it much for rendering.

202 doesn't crash so often as previous versions which is pretty handy too.

Im a novice with it but agreed on the poly modeling, very cool tools

You may want to look at some of the poly tools for max that are out there
like Polyboost, Orion Flame and Mesh tools

I think polyboost and orion flame or $100 to $150, Mesh tool is free if memory serves.

modos poly modeling is amazing. The macros make a lot of things really easy. I personally love it, but I use Viz, and the conversion between the modo and Viz isnt very smooth, so I havent done much with it.

yep, it's a little limited on export file types. I usually save it to a LW object, then use polytrans to convert to obj which seems to go into max pretty well.

Give us some updates... Their new stuff seems pretty nice, in the range of z-brush / mudbox nice.

Is not modo able to export directly to .obj or fbx?

                it is.
the quality of those exports was in 201 somewhat questionable, though.
                Haven't yet tried with 202.
All i know is the betatester i used to work with is always very very busy with it...

I would consider modo as an alternative to Bodypaint, are they feature comparable when it comes to painting layers and such?

Yeah, works great as a painting tool... you can create unlimited layers and paint to each layer, with different blend modes. You can't do the mudbox/zbrush style displacement painting yet, but bump painting shows up realtime in the OpenGL viewport and you can use it to approximate displacement.

Try the demo if you get a chance.

Bodypaint 2.5 costs 800$, old technology and only for painting...
Modo 202 costs 895 $ and its all new and an allrounder...sounds good!
