  • How to model this?

I know I should post this in the Max forum, but I've not had good response over there.

I'd like to know if anyone has any good ideas how to model this kind of drape. I've used a bitmap w/ bump in the past but my client is asking for more realism. I've tried displacement with out a whole lot of success. But must admit I'm no pro at it.

I'm fairly new to Max modeling having used FormZ almost exclusively. If there is a tips for modeling in Max web site that has a tut on modeling this kind of object, please let me know. If not, I'd really like a few pointers on how to model it.

    Thanks,

    Craig

    You could using simcloth.
Or if you wanted to model it, just model (lowpoly) a few of the pleats then clone them and attach and weld it all back together, then add a meshsmooth. Then add some noise and a bit of random vertex jiggering it should look pretty good.

Thanks DaForce. At the risk of sounding stupid, what is random vertex jiggering? I'll also give sim cloth a try. Always wanted to see what it was.

Either use the noise modifier or just go into the vertices and movethem around randomly by hand.

heheh yeah its basically what joconnell said.

Just to add some randomness to it thats, maybe even use some soft selection as well

Here's what Daforce is trying to say:

            1. Model lowpoly pleats
            2. Clone and attach (weld verts)
            3. Add meshsmooth
            4. Add noise and randrom vertex jiggering
            5.
            6. PROFIT!

                    Oh yeah, jiggering:

Jiggering and jolleying are terms that describe a high productivity method of producing pottery shapes like plates and bowls. The only difference between jiggering and jolleying is that with jiggering, the mold determines the inner surface of the pot and with jolleying the mold determines the outer surface of the pot.

                    jig•ger n.
                    1. A person who jigs or operates a jig.

                    2.
                    a. A small measure for liquor, usually holding 1 1/2 ounces.
                    b. This amount of liquor.

                    3. A device, such as a drill, that operates with a jerking or jolting motion.

                    4. An article, term or a device, the name of which eludes one.

Maybe DaForce used the word jigger because the real term, as stated in 4 above, has eluded him, probably because of ingesting to much jigger in 2 above? That is why he is so jolley(ing). Yuk Yuk Yuk

Oh my goodness, am I engaging in playful banter? Ohhhh Nooooo.

                      Then there is jiggery-pokery
