  • How do they do that - new ipod nano ad

    http://www.apple.com/ipodnano/ads/

Does anybody have a clue how they do this effect - I am thinking that it is a combination of live action tracked into a 3D package and then there is some sort of extreme motion blur texture applied to a self-illumated material.
An Art Director over here at work just asked for a similar effect. I was thinking Ghost trails with a self illuminated material that dims over time ?

    Easy Right

Thanks as always for your help.

I first saw that spot when browsinf a portuguese forum, where they suspect the 3d tracking and post work on the moblur...though trapcode was mentioned...
if u want to do some small portuguese reading( ):

          Excellent

I've already tried that - he covered himself in baby oil and F@@Ked off to West Hollywood

That plug-in looks awesome - I think we might already have it in the company - does an amazing job, AE is so much better at those hot hot glows then any 3D renderer I have seen. I love Shine for that reason - anohter killer AE plug-in - thanks a million for your help.

Has anyone tried with Vray Physical Cam? I was thinking it could be possible to create trails from vray directly, as in a real cam, just with long exposures.

Are you sure this is only post ?

Well in the mov, you can see, that the light effect happens in 3d i think.

couldnt this be done with particles in 3d and after this with trapcode. ???

Would like to do this too.

                Very nice

Yeah, exoplis did the ad. These guys are really talented artists, I've spent hours at their site.

you could do this with 3d motion blur but you'd have to really crank up the number of geometry samples to get smooth curves of motion. I think the trapcode method might be faster and more refinable.

This was about 50 motion blur samples:

But you're better of looking at particles I think or running a very bright but transparent plane along the objects path and putting a broken texture on it...

I was just talking to someone and they said you could do that with Maya paint effects pretty easily.

There are loads of ways you could do it.

Personally, I'd model a plane around the path I wanted and animate the construction of it for more control. Then use a texure for a mask and sort out the colours and glow in post.

Ghost trails - Motion Blur - a little post work

This is What I came up with after a little experimentation. I used Ghost Trails on an animated biped mocap file - he is swinging a sword. I created a couple of splines and animated them with different trail effect times. I then used a vray self illuminated material, with a white to orange fall off ( this one is rendered without GI the light comes from a simple Omin and Vray Sahdows )
I'm new to motion blur settings - not really sure what I am doing so I am sure this could be optimized - Duration is set to 5 frames with a Subdivision of 10 - there rendertimes where pretty high - something like 60-90 minutes.

I did a little post work in Phootoshop to up the contrast. I am delighted with this test but have been bounced on another project so won't be working on it for awhile.

                            Thanks for your help

Yup - now try mapping a torn looking texture on in either the opacity or diffuse channels so you get some texture and variation through it - use additive transparency so it builds up in all of the overlaps - great renders.
