  • Flowline in Action - amazing Sony ad

    http://www.moving-picture.com/sony_paint

I just came across this ad - it's quite amazing. After reading about it on the Moving Picture Company site they mentioned fluid effects done in flowline -
from Scanline I wonder what the add was rendered in ?

I know they did some very impressive tests with Vray awhile back.

Beautiful editing for a stunningly "simple" ad.
What with the running clown, i wonder...
Btw, detail in color sprays is nuts.
Thanks Adam for the tip, made my day

it´s not completely flowline. i remember making of vids on youtube. most of the stuff was done real.

Our latest TV ad - featuring massive paint explosions - took 10 days and 250 people to film. Huge quantities of paint were needed to accomplish this, which had to be delivered in 1 tonne trucks and mixed on-site by 20 people.

The effect was stunning, but afterwards a major clean-up operation was required to clear away all that paint!

The cleaning took 5 days and 60 people. Thankfully, the use of a special water-based paint made it easy to scrape-up once the water had evaporated.

Keeping everyone safe was also an important factor. A special kind of non-toxic paint was used that is safe enough to drink (it contains the same thickeners that are sometimes used in soups). It was also completely harmless to the skin.
the on set stuff looked pretty massive lol

after looking at it a bit closer i would assume the fake looking ones...they are either comped in or full cg...e.g. :

This looks really awfully comped over *shudder*

Also taking a look at that heli shot there's some butt ugly shadow comping...i vouch for kicking out the flowlinestuff...the original looks even more incredible knowing they actually blew up that building in paint lol.

Here's one of those "visitor" clips on youtube :

              http://youtube.com/watch?v=AhSffuloHd8

if you search a lil you'll find a lot more also involving some other buildings...would have LOVED to be there

btw there's the HD version for download on the official ad page :

              http://www.bravia-advert.com/

check out the images gallery for some on-set shots too

And for the statistic freaks :

              70,000 litres of paint
              358 single bottle bombs
              33 sextuple air cluster bombs
              22 Triple hung cluster bombs
              268 mortars
              33 Triple Mortars
              22 Double mortars
              358 meters of weld
              330 meters of steel pipe
              57 km of copper wire

              lol

                Great info

Thanks a million for the extra video especially the U-tube stuff - amazing to see how much of it was done practical. I think it was always going to be a hard thing to pull off in CG - being daytime and using the fireworks concept, from reading the blurb over at MPC it seems as though CG was as important for pre-viz as for the finished effects, I'd imagine it was essential for getting the editing so finely tuned to the music.

My brother is the after effects guy in the family and he had mentioned the bad comping - I can't say I noticed it too much myself, it was the concept that really impressed me more then anything else

As for the clown? maybe he just happened to be there and they left him in the shot - sometimes you see clowns in the most unlikely of places :

                      Funny thing was ...

The funny thing was they where driving like - well like a lunatics - weaving in and out of all the other traffic, getting way too close, well over the speed limit. When they passed us I couldn't believe what was driving the car - I said to my brother " There where two clowns driving that Honda" and he replies "Yeh F@@cking assholes" I tried to explain that they where real clowns so we had chase them for 10 miles doing 85-90 to get that photo.

                        Still shaking with laughter
AS for the GC, i appreciate the paint might have been real in most cases (Sony ain't new to this type of ads: previous one was zillions of coloured plastic bouncing balls down steep streets, good music, better editing...), the visual detail they managed to achieve with the paint explosions is crazy anyways...
I honestly thought the last building with a colour gradient was CG, to all effects.
Glad to get some more schooling

Just check out the Bravia-advert (http://www.bravia-advert.com/) site as posted above, there is an about 5min behind the scenes video and some stuff I was sure was CG ended up being real. looking at the BTS video there was not much at all that was CG by the looks of it and that I find to be way more impressive...

Guys... it was ALL done practically. There was NO cg done on either that spot or the one with the balls.
