alright, I'm building a new machine. I have a supermicro x7dae with xeon 5110. my problem is with the heatsink that comes with the CPU. the standoffs are too short!!! so is the captive screw! you can't attach it to a backplane because the socket and the cpu sit to high. I'm thinking the easiest solution is to get 8 longer captive screws and eight plastic standoffs (I'm afraid of bending the board). but then i was thinking of getting snap in heatsinks. does anyone have a suggestion for a good snap in heatsink for the 771 socket?

if anyone is going to build their own system with a supermicro x7dae and xeon 5110.

Supremicro doesn't supply a back plate and of course intel doesn't either so you'll need to pick them up someplace (I happened to have extra parts floating around)

also, the heatsink captive screws are .75 in length and are .062 too short to go past the clip and into the backplate so you will need to drill into the heatsink to drop the screw and get that length.

what a pain.

WOW I would have sent the whole lot back, that's just ridiculous and at the same time makes no sense what so ever.

I had to sit and look at the thing for a while before I get up enouh courage to drill it out. I kept thinking "if i do this does it void the warranty on the CPU's?" In the end I figured if there was a problem I could buy new heatsinks to send back, they're pretty cheap.

Got it up and running last night and had my two machine going. eight buckets at once is a nice thing to see. this machine seems (after a quick test) about 50 percent faster than my other system (ncch-dl 3ghz xeons) both machines have 2 gigs of ram. on the one I was getting 9 seconds a frame and on the other 15 second a frame on a small animation test.
