  • What you think of new VRay Shader SDK ?

Is there any ideas on using it ? As I'm not a C programmer (basic Delphi knowledge only I know it's not as powerful, but handy... ), but really interested to see smth like tutorial (first step, second and so on). Tutorial from scratch. As I want to write real dispersion shader, carpaint shader... smth to simplify my work.

I can get MS Visual Studio and some of the books

    Any ideas ?
I just can't seem to trust myself
So what chance does that leave, for anyone else?

    Hi,

it's complete and you can do much more with it than writing shaders. Geometry, renderelements, atmospherics. Everything is possible. Writing a tutorial however isn't easy because it largely depends on the knowledge you already have. A solid c++ Background is an advantage since VRay is optimized for performance, not for "easy" code.
There are a lot of samples included in the package which are a perfect starting point. Going from there is a good idea in any case and probably better than a tutorial.

    Best regards,

    Dieter

You can see compiled and working examples easily... VRayPlane, VRayFur, VRayToon, VRayBlendMtl, VRayOverrideMtl and others are all part of the SDK.

For car paint specifically, there is no need whatsoever to write a separate shader in C++. You can simply write a wrapper in MaxScript that works internally by combining two or three layers inside a VRayBlendMtl (similar to the way the Egz materials work).

haha... I hear Paul's idea. Often us artists who dont have any c++ or c-- knowledge just want some cool shaders such as carpaint to be avalable.
Maybe we should move this to a wish seciton and wish for carpaint

Paul, you know we have a full RnD team here now and...still its hard to make shaders. I think partially is because (no offence to c++ people) the programmers dont really know what options the artists need. Often I have to explain the most simplest things... for example why we need diffuse separate from color and so on...

so which is harder? teaching an artist to program, or teaching a programmer art?

I think its both, imo, those without artistic talant naturally become hard core programmers. For me, I was never good at that, math...yack. So for me to learn c++...is just tooo much.
