  • Doesn't f-edge work on open edges??

    Hello.
Does the f-edge material work on open edges?
It just seams to work on corners
I'm using it as difuse color not bump.
    I'm I missing something?
    Thanks

I dont see how it can work on an open edge, the whole point is it mimics a smooth curved edge.. thats impossible on an open edge.

It's the main purpose but it doesn't mean it can't be usefull for other things. In this case I was trying to smooth and add a little noise to the transition between different objects. Imagine a sidewalk with some terrain besides it and some paths throught the terrain. These would be in different objects because the image needed no maks the paths woud be very big and the paths are cutted in the terrain. Of course I could UVmap this paths but that not easy.
Using f-egde I would just select the paths open edges and use it to mask between materials.
Another thing that could improve a little is using "warptexture" with f-edge but the effect only works on some edges..don't know why.

there´s a script on scriptspot to ease that kind of uv mapping. you select bands of polys and the script creates straightened mapping for them.

        Check scriptspot.com

            Hi. Thanks Thorsen.
The first script is great for this purpose.
I did see it some time ago but never thought it would work so well
Nevertheless it would be great to use f-edge just because the process would be faster.
            Anyway...great script
            Thanks

Is f-edge still available? I've heard many talk about it, but I've never seen it or tried it.

f-Edge is based on Smoothing, so it does not work on open edges as there is no smoothing for them. It is a really cool map though.

or you could just use the rounded edges option in mental ray 3.5

                        Hi.
Well...I think it would be usefull if it could paint open edges. It has "edge painting" too.
All "EdgeTex" maps I've seen have the same problem that is they don't paint the little triangle formed in the intersection between visible and invisible edges. Assuming only visible edges are painted of course.
They also don't accept edge selection nor gradients.
F-Edge does all this and its a pity that it can't be used for the purpose I mention earlier just because it doesn't recognize open edges.
MorphMap is great for mapping some transitions using some kind of edge map is much faster process.
Anyone knows of any "edgetex" material without the above problems?

Does this do what you're looking for?

I haven't tried it yet, but I've been meaning to. Looks pretty useful, especially for terrain work.
