  • convert to editable poly smoothing problems

    Hi,

I have a model imported from rhino with powertranslator. I set the correct mesh density, but then I need to convert it to an editable poly so I can put a shell modifier on it. But when I do so, the smoothing gets messed up and I can't get it to look good again.

Is there a simple way to solve this?

do you need the edit poly before the shell?

did you extract the poly from the pwnurbs, or converted it?

Adding a smooth operator on top of the stack, with a smoothing angle of 180 should probably fix that.
I say 180 because the normals may be flipped in the model (while displaying correctly in viewport) so the smoother may or may not do the proper job.
Set it to the max value allowed, and step back until it looks correct.

Sorry if you thought about this implicitly

you shouldnt use smooth modifiers on PN models as most mesh operations mess up the vertex normals that aid a LOT in good shading. I'd suggest creating the shelling via pnurbs and then convert the PNurbs to Editable poly/mesh using the viewport display settings for tesselation control

Putting a shell modifier on top of the brep object crashes max.

I only have powertranslator, and altough there is a shell option, I never been able to use it succesfully. I may work on a sphere or something, but not on more complex shapes. Also once you shelled it, there's no way to change the thickness or simply to remove the shelling. Usually creating a shell from a mesh is much easier than keeping everything in nurbs, that's why I try the edit poly conversion.

So I used an edit poly modifier, didn't extract the mesh from the brep object (will try to find that option)
