Well...stuck with Dell's yes....But I mean anything is up for consideration....I just have to have the specs to say...This is why and how much..etc..etc..
I do have an old case...Hmmmm...I like that idea.....lol...I remember back in the day, that probably could have been done....but with computer inventory....Son of a $$%#...jk....
I had the It dude look into the BOXX, which I have heard great things...and I know that with Dell...We always get the gold package which is a Dell guy will come and fix whatever it is that day or sooner...and if he can't...I assume some sort of massage with benefits is included...LOL....that actually came from a Dell rep...Good to know they have a sense of humor....
So...NO VISTA...check....but it looks cool....but I shall refrain....
Definetly XP 64 though....
Morbid: Do you guys think that a single Quad core at 2.66 with be better than a Dual Dual 3.0 or 2.66 etc..Remember I am running Viz 2006 not Max....But not sure if that makes a difference...and I do all my modeling in Arch Desktop 2006 and then go to Viz and Vray the heck out of it....
And I am a little novice at the numbering system thing...For instance.....
Are the 5300 series of Processors all QUADS. I would be happy to just get a single kickbut processor and then leave the other slot open for future expansion....And with the Ram....Well...I like to run PS CS2, VIZ, AutoCAD, Firefox, etc..etc...and sometimes when rendering these site plans in PS at 200 dpi or even 150 dpi at 36X48...these files can get pretty big and PS is a hog with memory....I recently tried the beta of CS3 and the same file used at least 75% less memory...or 256 megs instead of 1 gig...But that's far away. Thanx all for your help...Keep it coming...This is great ammo for the techs and powers at be....
I will say that any single quad core cpu would outperform the dual dual with the same clock speeds, because in the single cpu all the cores are on one chip thus making the data transfer a lot faster. Atleast thats how it was explained to me. And, once you go with dual dual, then there is no way to make it a dual quad without swapping new mobo. Whereas if you go with single quad with another socket for another quad there is that room.
All I can say is, I build my system on my own, that is provided the specs to the computer shop and they put it together, and...I've never been happier with the system before. In the vray bench thread it outperforms most of the dual duals, so it did with my work machine, which was a dual dual core at 2.66. Outperformed that one by about 30%.
And gaming is f...ing great
Morbid: By "core extreme 2 - quad model at 2.66ghz " do you mean the QX6700?. Because as far as I know those can't be used in a dual setup, on the 53xx can.
-if money is no problem and speed is the ultimate goal, then I advice to go for a Xeon 5300 series set up. It is expensive, but you get a superb rendering machine. the dual cpu setup is unbeatable when you insert 2 quadcore xeons.
-if you want to balance price with performance , i'd say go for a single CPU , the quadcore QX6700. It yields very good results for a reasonable price.
-if you're on a budget and still want a best buy for performance then a E6600 would be your cheapest solution.
I'd strongly advise against your current set up, as the 5150 is marginally (inferior) to the QX6700, but with much higher price tag.
To put it simple : You'll pay toughly 1000$ more for exactly the same performance.

The E6600 is a simple dual core of the latest generation
A QX6600 is a quadcore cpu that hasn't been released yet, but is planned for Q1 this year...
as for the performance between a E6600 and a QX6700, just look at the benckmarks.
an E6600 (@2.4ghz) does the bench in 6:26mins
My QX6700 (@2.6ghz) does it in 2:40mins
surplus cost : roughly €600
from an economical point of view, doubling your speed has never been so cheap !

yes, its a qx6700, and well I didnt know that it cant be used in a dual setup, but the idea can be applied to a xeon. But this is a matter of time imo. Though the cpu costs aroud 1,200, to buy the most newest and most expensive hardware is not a good idea too. Since soon they are going to make single octad, and so on and so on.
Awesome..See...this is what i needed.....So...again...I am trying to convince them to let me build one...BUT for now...We have the Dell...
I can choose a Single QUAD Core X5355 2.66 ghz with XP64
geForce 8800GTX
4gb Ram
Dual Dvd Burners
Dual 19" flat panels
250GB HD
Logitech Cordless 3200 Bundle
Logitech z4 Speaker
Dell Gold plan..etc..etc...
Roughly $4800
Or...Same set up with DUAL - Quads E5320 1.86GHz
Roughly $5100
Dual - Quad Core Intel® Xeon® Processor E5345 2.33GHz would be $800 more
But man...The one thing I can not get past is the Ram...But of course I am running the 3gb switch now and it gives me issues anyways.....So sometimes I dont even run it......SO I would be DOUBLING my Ram to 4GB....so I GUESS I would be ok...
X5355 the same as that QX6700 2.66...they are both the same ghz...this naming convention confuses me.....
UPDATE....
Now in early 2007, Intel has now begun full-scale shipments of their entire line of quad-core Xeon processors, including their high-end 2.33 GHz and 2.66 GHz models. As many of you are no doubt aware, the 2.66 GHz quad-core Xeon (dubbed X5355) has the same features and clock speeds of Intel's top of the line desktop chip, the Core 2 Extreme QX6700. The Xeon X5355 model, however, costs about 25% more but supports multi-processing.
Well...Again thanx ...I will be here all day...Network is down. We lost two HD's out of the array and we are running off a backup server here....and restoring the data....But the internet is up...Wahoooo..
Bloody hell - all these processor code names - its getting damn confusing. Whatever happened to a simple 'MHz' speed telling you if one processor was faster than another. Well, we've bit the bullet and ordered the following:
QX6700 Quad-core 4x2.66GHz
RAID 5 Western Digital E-SATA setup
4GB PC2-6400 800MHz RAM
ATI FireGL V7350 1GB video
30" HP Flat panel displays
