  • XP64 and applications

I would really like to know how are experiences with applications like After Effects, Photoshop and other neccessary tools under XP64 especially in the 32bit emulation mode

How stable is MAX9 in 32bit mode if I need to run it next to the 64bit version ?

There's no emulation.... Relax works seamlessly.
I just can't seem to trust myself
So what chance does that leave, for anyone else?

premiere 5 won't run on it.

I have trouble with max 7 not unloading even though I have shut it down or changed files. I keep the task manager open to check and shut them down. other wise I'll have multiple instances of max going and slowing everything down.

      other than that works well.

        No problem with max7.
Dunno about Premier, but AE works fine.

          Interesting to see some reactions

I'm specially interested in ALL the latest from Adobe(incl.the Macromedia apps), Digital Fusion, FormZ, MAX7, MAX9 (32bit), Painter and Lightwave.

Are there any compositors or video-editors especially written for XP64 to use ALL memory, especially if you have more then 16GB. I heard even the new CS3 suite will not be 64bit because it is too hard (read expensive) to offer support on these platforms for the relatively small number of XP64 (or Vista64) users

I've been running XP64 for over a year now and have only had a few problems:
            1) Driver support... especially printers... if no driver exists, it ain't gonna work.

            2) Applications - virtually all of my applications have worked trouble free. The few exceptions are:
            • Apps that install drivers - Burning software in particular and older versions of iTunes
            • Apps that install printers - some business apps install virtual printers for generating their reports - usually doesn't work on XP64
            • Apps that do an OS version check - Some installers look for specific versions of windows (bad, bad, bad installer! no dinner for you!) and so fail when they encounter the XP64 version identifier (Discreet Cleaner and AutoCAD LT 2005 both did this for me)
            • Apps that have dongles - if it has a dongle, it needs drivers for the dongle...
            • Apps that require specific registry settings or keys - rare problem, but the XP64 registry is structured slightly differently and this can screw up installers (Dreamweaver 8.0.2 update is one that fails because of this)

              Hm....
Love x64 for a long time. Nothing bad, except drivers. Any .msi installer can be edited, so it won't search for a specific OS. I installed microsoft zune theme on my win2k3 x64 with no problem Less than a second to edit .msi script

                A very important one:

How is memory (RAM) handling with 32bit apps under XP64 ? Can each started 32bit app use 4 GB (if you have 16 of course) or can only ALL started 32bit apps together use 4 GB. For instance: can I start 8 singlethreaded 32bit rendernodes (Lightwave ) using 2 GB each ?

that is a really good news,
I was just disappointed to learn from Dynedain that acad lt 2005 looks for an xp32 installation because my new machine will run xp64!!
Paul do u have any suggestion to edit the .msi installer, I never did that before...

                  thanx

                  a.

yep, they should. assuming all these apps are large address aware, otherwise they won't access more than 2 gigs even under xp 64.

Hm... Let's find a packager of your .msi based app. Is it installshield or macrovision (former wise)... Or just plain basic .msi ? After that step, we need to know which msi editing app we can affrod. Personally, we're using good old Wise for windows installer 5.x - simple and very intuitive. Bought it times ago, but it still can edit lots of .msi files directly (so, you open it, change f.e. OS checking routine to "0" and that's it).
Or you can use simple and free disassembler, to put a breakpoint on some words or poppin' up windows, which you can find in progs memory, so you can write couple 'o' bytes, to make it think the cheking was OK

                      Simple

just installed XP64bit on my test machine. so far so good. No problems, except EGZ materials wont work! does anyone else have this issue?

other than that, joined a network, roaming etc, everything seems fine.

EGZ materials have worked fine for us? Did you make sure to put the appropriate files in your scripts folder? I haven't tested EGZ mats with Max 9 yet... but we're moving away from them since they were compiled for a much older version of VRay

do u think that ORCA (as msi editor) from MS will do the job as well?
