  • cinema 4d - good/bad/ugly?

    hi folks

i have no knowledge at all regarding Cinema 4D but need to find out in a hurry. how does the program compare to Max? is it on the same level? if anyone knows it and max and can let me know how they compare it would be much appreciated.

    many thanks

What i heard about c4d 10, I think max9 and c4d 10 are on nearly the same level now ...vray is missing for c4d , but on the other side you get plugins for c4d, which i really like to see as max plugin too!

I worked few month ago with c4d *9* and liked it because it never crashed.
The usability itself is different, but it's nothing you have to worry about.

Modelling is a bit different because in max i often use the "edit mesh/poly" modifier to archive a nearly nondestructive way of modeling and i didn't find a way in c4d which is similar ..but maybe i wasn't instructed enough.
Beside this fact i think the polygon modeling tools in c4d are better then the outofthebox modelling tools from max.

The materialeditor is IMHO also better, because it's much clearer where you are and what you are doing ..the maxeditor is sometimes a nightmare ..escpecialy when working with maps in maps in maps..

Rendering ...well ..vray is missing. The c4d renderer seems to be a brother from finalrender. With GI enabled it's not slow, but it's also not very fast. Raytracing without GI is pretty fast ..even faster then vray (?).

    my 2c.

Actually Vray for Cinema is in beta stage. So, I think you can try to find it elsewhere.
I never liked Cinema. It's totally different compared to max. Smth like Softimage And to get max functionality, you need tons of plugz. IMHO, of course, never tried it in production, just some thoughts from my friends...
I just can't seem to trust myself
So what chance does that leave, for anyone else?

C4D 10 closed the gap and is still half the price of max !
..even upgrades are cheaper and maxon don't force you into the expensive subscription programm.

C4D is really a very progressiv 3d application and when you have a look at the plugindeveloper, then i get the feeling that it's more interresting for them to develop for c4d then for max. ..or in other words:
Compiling plugins for every new maxversions is odd - i could name at least 5 plugins i really miss because they were never compiled for newer max versions.

The max fileformat issue is also nothing you have to worry about in c4d - and not even this, C4D loads many many 3d formats - except the island: *.max

So - IMHO ..there is a gap between C4D and max when it comes to production ..and now AD/max have to close it.
