max grid problem i cant find the answer for

Trying to setup a grid view so i can work on a building with 'weird' angles.

I setup the view fine and align it to the same angle the elevation was taken from - but when i go to this view in one of the view ports i can no longer middle mouse button drag the view around.. it will only zoom in and out from a fixed point, that never seems to actually be centered on the building

any ideas?

using max 9 x64 and xp64

you have to activate the grid. right click, get quad, then activate grid should be there.
