Something better than lattice modifier?

I think someone posted something similar to the lattice modifier here and it created seamless geometry. I am looking to create planes or tubes going along edges of a a sphere.

something about a script for creating organic curtain walls pops in my head but i can't think of where/what/who it was

Its pretty rough, and by no means perfect, but its good for basic organic cladding.
You may get mesh problems with excessively sharp geometry.

When I find some time, I'm going to work on this a bit more.
