  • BSOD's are back...pls help

is anybody experience the same problem?

    directx 9c (from SP2 for xp64) + Nvidia VGA (GF7900gtx) + NVdriver (forceware9.6.8.9) + max9x64sp1(both direct3d or OpenGL) = BSOD's(alot)

There was a time I was with the latest Nvidia WHQL drivers, but I had to switch back to forceware9.6.8.9 because of the BSODs. So now I have no courage and time to try something "latest".

help please. Any suggestions what to remove or what to upgrade?

Is there a pattern as to when the blue screen appears?

On a side note, I've also had a lot of BSOD's lately, which seem related to my new GeForce 8800 graphics card or its drivers...

    Best regards,
    Vlado

i had a lot of problems with the latest forceware drivers (got a 7900gtx), the latest stable driver for my system was the ForceWare 91.48 Driver - try this one and see if it helps.

Are you sure no one installed the BSOD screensaver? That's always a good prank!!

I had one recently but the only thing that had changed on my system was the installation of max sp1.

additionally I am also having trouble saving files above a certain size with sp1. anyone run into that problem?

              Hi all,
Tha system was stable until I update XP64 to SP2 and max9 to SP1. I read that SP2 for XP64 change the DirectX to 9c.

Forceware 96.89 worked flawlessly till upgrades I mentioned above. So I think it's matter of compatibility between new SP2(xp64) or newSP1(max) with the nvidia drivers and switching to even older driver version than FW96.89 wouldn't resolve the problem.

Vlado , there is no pattern. The system freezes when changing viewports (max/min toggle) or when work on other application and switching back to max. Sometime it's gettin "breath", but sometimes it crashes to BSOD for a second and continues restarting without confirmation.

http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=31168 - last post of "Linux_Professor" sounds very conclusive about NVIDIA
              ---------
"Sounds like this crashing on NVIDIA is a problem. From what I can determine, NVIDIA states that using the GPU for over 5 seconds is not recommended. For computations that need "ALOT" of time, you should consider breaking the task or thread load when you have alot of computations.

HOWEVER, if there is an intrinsic kernel to manage the threads then I beleive the onus is on the kernet, not the developer. I beleive this 5 second restriction is a caveat that NVIDIA uses to warn people about a serious problme in the kernel which has a defect in properly managing GPU usage.

At this point, we are all stuck with "the 5 second rule" for the NVIDIA kernel. My particular application requires huge amounts of GPU resources and the kernel is crashing if I exceede the 5 second rule.

Realistically, I cannot put this card into production and risk it migh crash. So, for now, it is an intersting concept, certainly worth looking at but not more than a curiosity untill this problem is properly addressed and resolved."
