  • RED DIGITAL CAMERA AT NAB - IT'S REAL

Yes, it exists, it´s real. For 17.000 dollars the camera can be yours, capable of recording 4K footage! Previously i had great expectations for the panasonic HVX200, but the RED cam can give the quality of a 35 mm film cam but at a fraction of the price...Can't wait to lay my hands on it
The price is saying is for indie filmmakers but i dont know you can be called indie after getting the quality this cam can offer...Do i sound excited? Well, if the camera gives what it promised...it can be a revolution...Even Peter Jackson has shot amazing footage with it....

Yes, I have. Not the best shot to fully grasp the quality of the picture...it gets increasingly distracting

But i have seen this particular shot on a HD screen and looks amazing. Waiting for RED to post the Peter Jackson footage on their website!

Give Sony's Vegas Video a shot. I use it to edit all my video and have been since its first release and its faster IMO than premiere and can do pretty much anything premiere can, even 5.1 audio...

vegas is nice but no it can't edit 4k footage last I tried. Who knows it might be able to do it now. We've moved on to Adobe Premiere.

Sadly only a 1k version. In the stills Gallery there are 4k stills from it tho.

                      Regards,

Well I really think the RED is only suitable for those who can take profit of it in the short run. Plus, until october or november, cameras will not be shipped with all the features final cam will have (as it can be seen in the "temptative shipping" section of RED website), so RED is only worth considering beyond 2008, when it will probably be cheaper.

Well, I ve seen the Peter Jackson's footage and it´s not bad, it gets better when displayed on an external TV. But again, it´s too soon to properly evaluate the quality u will be getting with the final model. At least, it´s definitely better than the HVX200.

                              RED ONE - Barcelona!

Hey I was actually able to handle a Red One myself here in Barcelona!

I attended a mini expo with 2 red cams and had the opportunity to see some footage, check if the camera, as some people were saying, got some problems with overheating and taking a look at the workflow.

Well the camera was warm, not red hot. It looks like the prototypes lacked essential refrigeration systems but those problems are gone with the new models.

The Red One is able to shoot at 4.5 K and in some modes it can record up to 120 frames per second. That means smooth and cinematic slow motion!

The workflow was MAC-based, using propietary red software and codecs, but with a quad core pc, like anyone here in the forum should own , editing at least 2K footage seems doable. Final Cut Pro was the editor of choice. Although i would like AVID to support this camera, i seriously doubt it, so we would need to stick to FCP in mac and Premiere in PC.

Unlike other HD cams, RED ONE saves RAW files, which allowed the presenter to tweak the ISO parameter in the Redcine and recover a lot of details from dark and bright areas...far more than I was expecting. In fact this camera looks like a highend digital still camera with superpowers...and of course, at 24 fps (or more!).

Im willing to shoot my new short film with this cam...but I do hope the other manufacturers learn the lesson of flexibility instead of trying desperately to protect their business by saying: "our cameras are the way they are meant to be".
