  • .03 - Maarten Van Severen - VITRA

    Hi all,

I'm trying to find my way into max modeling. Well it's mostly trying to get away from AutoCAD for the modeling part
This is my first good attempt. I'll model other ones as well soon.
I have acces to official (poor quality) CAD models from the vitra website, so the scale of the model should be fairly exact.
.03 Vitra chair from Maarten Van Severen.

You can find it on six4one. The complete modeling tree is left intact, max 9.

Critics on how I could improve it or better modeling approaches are very welcome.

    Polys
    no meshsmooth: 560
    with meshsmooth (1iteration): 1674
P.S. The stamp you see is because I use student version.

    looks good to me.

one of the best ways to learn max modelling is to find yourself a car and model that up. worked wonders for me. a right pain to start with but worth the perseverance in the end.

      Looks neat.

Assuming the width of the chair doesnt curve of have and bumps in it.. you dont need all those width segments on the mesh.
You would only need those if your adding more detail in or a divet in the middle for one ass

Thanks for the tip. I'll try it as soon as I have some more time on my hands. If the results are good, I'll share the love

It has a slight bend for the ass. Checked the reference photos again, and I added a slight curve to the back now too.

          Ahh I see

Could still use slightly less but even still, not too bad.

I myself dont like modelling cars.. too much trouble. I prefer to model things I can get my hands on and measure ideally.
I have a few pics of a lamp I modelled a while back. Detail is pretty nice. I can show you the wires as well if that would help you. I find view other peoples lowpoly wires for the modelling extremely helpfull, got me to where I am today. (sitting on my ass posting in a forum.. )

Anyway, let me know if you want to have a gander.

You're right. I could cut it back to 450 polys I guess. I'll refine it when I have some time. I allready started the next chair of severen: .04 > coming soon

Quick question: I have triangles on the corners because I chamfered the edges. I read it's always better if it's all quad. It seems like meshsmooth is handling it better then. Should I always aim for all-quads? Even if that increases polycount?
Please correct me if I'm wrong, this is probably all very basic for you guys and perhaps this is the wrong forum for this, but I promise I won't ask modeling questions here after this one.. Well perhaps one or two

I would very much appreciate your help. I PM you my email.

Yeah avoiding triangle is a piece of cake, dont chamfer Well if you do only do on edge loop at a time. The easiest way is to make another cut/slice edge very close to the edge of the chair, that will have the same affect. Basically the closer the edges the tighter the smoothing.

                Nice chair.

But how do you download anything from that site?

There doesn't seem to be a contact email.
