Interesting for me is, how much power has an overclocked Q6600 @3GHz compared to other Qxxxx

Hi guys, decided to resurect this thread rather than start another one.

I have put my system together and it is all running really well now, so I decided to start overclocking it.

      I have:

      Intel Q6600 2.4ghz
      Abit IP35 Pro Snake
      Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 PRO
      Akasa silver based Thermal Compound
      8gb Patriot DDR2 800mhz ram

Without increasing the cpu voltage I can get up to about 3.06ghz. Then I have to push it up a bit and I can get it to about 3.4ghz. Only snag is that it runs just a little bit hot. I am getting 40-42c idle and 75c max at load, Should I try another fan like the Scythe Infinity (which I have in an AMD machine and is amazing) or just take the voltage back down and be happy at 3.06ghz?

I just remembered also that when I view my temps in speedfan I get 5 readouts (CPU, Core1, core2, core3, core4), the actual CPU temp seems quite way out (-108c) and the individual cores are quite a bit more normal (36c) all at idle. I went on the side of caution and the temps I have quoted are the highest individual core temp, is this the correct way to do it or is the CPU temp a more accurate measure?

What kind of temps is everyone having at the moment whilst playing around with this CPU?

On an aside note, I dont have much faith in these push pin style heatsink and fans. I cant see how the pressure can be anywhere near as snug as the older clamp style ones.

      Thanks guys.

Morbid Angel sorry if someone spoke about this before & I missed it but what are taking the temp readings from? I heard that various progs will give you diff readings? Also maybe its somthing else in your case getting too warm HDD or somthing? Whats the room temp?

thats funny... but I think its a bit extreme. I was able to drop my cpu tems significantly. I think they are ok now...

              well to conclude this thread.
I have updated the bios for my box. This resulted in tempreture drop of another 15 degrees! eather that or the temp monitoring was wrong in previous bios. In any case, after updating bios my cpu on idle with fan at half speed is 38-40 degreese celcius. At full load its 65-68.
So total of 35 degrees win for me from the start

The bios update has taken its toll though, as in another thread, it was giving me blue screen after windows boot. But removing firewall software somehow has fixed this problem. A question, my friend has suggested to completely cure this issue, to reset bios settings from mother board, and then reinstall windows. I have reset the bios settings but I wonder if I should reinstall windows?
Anyway, Im going to look into overclocking, but this current bios version for some reason fails to overclock via overclocking profiles. So I will wait for new version

Yeah i noticed some of the new bioses fixed temp algorithums.

My Q6600 G0 runs ar around 28-30c idle (with the cores varying from 18-23c) and load is about 10-15c on top of that depending on room temp.

                Great cpus.

Reset bios and reinstall windows... meh that would be a waste of time IMO. Reset the bios sure.. but wouldnt bother with windows reinstall.

yeah i don't see what windows reinstall would do for you.

i always flash the motherboard before i even build a pc with the latest, then tend not to ever again

agreed. I will see how it runs. If it starts to mess up I will reinstall
Thanks again guys its been fun.
