  • Workstation for students

    Hi guys,
we consider buying about 10 new workstation for our students. Being a university we tend to buy systems from dell or other bigger firms (we’ll get that a bit cheaper there) and don’t build it by ourselves ‚ ‘cos of guaranty, and service and such stuff. That means no overclocking, too. We have to stick with that system for the next 3 years and can’t even touch it to upgrade it. That’s the way it works here…
The budget is about 4000€ per machine. The prices in the US are much lower, so converting EUR in USD doesn’t work. It might be something about 4100 $ considering the US prices.

What choice seems to be a good solution?
    - 2x Dual Core Xeon@5410(2,33Ghz), 4GB RAM
    - 1x Quad Core Xeon@5355(2,66Ghz), 4GB RAM
    - 2xQuad Core Xeon@5320(1,86Ghz), 4GB RAM
    - Or maybe a MAC Pro: there you get 2x 2,66 Xeon with 8GB RAM for about the same price.

What are you considering best? What‘s about the graphics card? Vista 64Bit? Or stick with the good old XP 32Bit? Did some of you encountered any problems running a Mac Pro with Vista64? Is 8GB necessary? Consider the students usually do quite simple work. Rendertimes are definitely important, but more important is the overall workflow within max (or cinema4d, aftereffects, etc.).

I hope you have a few simple advices. Thanks a lot.

Bootcamp is still a beta and my co workers have only access to 2go when running windows... (while having 6Go installed) They had also some problems with the dual boot and the graphic card, so i should deconsider buying a mac...

I saw som eppl here in the forum using Mac pros, do they have the same issues ?

i have no complaints about my macpro. i have 5gb of ram installed and windows takes full advantage of it. no graphics card issues either...other than the fact i'm using the default card that comes with the macpro which isn't the best card you can get. nonetheless i can get about 50 fps in my viewports on a scene with 500k polys...good enough for me
i'd highly recommend it, and the price shud work with your budget.

Go for the Mac Pro. I am running XP 64 with bootcamp and it runs great. It is also much quieter than any PC I have owned.

BTW, I am going to install Vista 64 when I have the time since Micro$oft and other companies are putting more resources into Vista than XP (SP3 for XP has been pushed back to 2008 while SP1 for Vista has been moved up to 2007) and the driver issues are much better now than they were a few months ago. There is actually some software that won't run on XP64 but it will run on Vista 64 - for example Trend Micro's Internet Security 2007.

you need a better pc vendor if a mac is the cheapest option!

id also run xp64 rather than xp32 or vista.

Is there any reason to go Dell over other pc vendors like HP, Compaq, Gateway etc. ?

I love Intel Q6600 + 4gb of cheap ddr2 ram My new homestation And you get below $820 (for cpu,mb,ram) + cheap videocard (smth like nvidia 7900) + full tower = $1,180

              Oh, and a winxp64 or better - win2k3 x64
I just can't seem to trust myself
So what chance does that leave, for anyone else?
