  • duals or quads

Hey guys, Would it be better to have 4 quad intel Q6600's or 8 dual Amd x2 6000's? Would be using for mostly large stills on DR and slight chance for short animations.

    Thanks.

I would say intels, socket AM2 aint going anywhere. Its basically dead. Where as the socket 775 is still kicking for awhile yet.

However I dont know how the performance would be between those 2 cpus.
The AMD is clocked higher @ 3ghz then the intel at 2.4ghz but the C2D's are faster at the same GHZ, enought to make up the 600mhz difference I do not know.

Check a few reviews on the net and compare

Also at the end of july the intels will be dropping price by 50% on their cpu's

With teh Q6600 you need a decent heatsink as well, as they get rather hot.

Something like my heatsink is the ideal choice.

Thermalright ultra 120 extreme., get that if you plan to overclock.

hey Daforce...i m trying to make up my mind between that thermalright ultra 120 extreme and CoolerMaster Gemin II(http://www.coolermaster-europe.com/i...NU2-GP+GeminII)to cool my q6600...wich would u think to be more efficient?

ultra 120 extreme, no doubt. Best there is

And get a decent 120mm fan i got a scythe something or other which pumps out 66cfm at 1600rpm.. and at 31db or so.. but its still basically silent.

There is an even bigger thermalright have a look on their website, but i think performance is similar to the ultra120 extreme

              oki!
              will do!thanks Daforce!
...the ability to put 2 120mm fans over the cpu stroke me as a possible better idea...guess not!

You can with this sucker anyway... with abit of tinkering that is. but the cooling increases are very minimal

also looking for a nice/quiet/roomy case (hard task, i know). Originally i was looking for a chenbro SR109 (http://www.chenbro.com/corporatesite...s.php?serno=71), but i couldn t find it anywhere, so now i m leaning this:
                  3RSystem R-820, or 3RSystem Media Center H-4000 (www.3rsys.com/)
...ideally intel server boxes r perfect...but too pricy imo

Unfortunately I havnt really looked into server cases. So your somewhat on your own there.

Just make sure its got good air flow and atleast a couple of 120mm fans

Why would socket AM2 be dead?
There's the amd quadcore coming soon (i think it's Q4 2007), and that kicks asses (close to 400% speed increase versus a single core, whereas the dual-dual of intel reach 300%).
And of course it fits on an AM2 socket.

                      Care to elaborate, daforce?

hmmm i was under the belief that they were bring out a new chipset for all the new cpu's.

                        Consider me learned

Lol, i built my rig on it, knowing that i wouldn't prolly be able to afford a dual-dual-dual (8 cores, lol) straight away.
But that it would be very very cheap to switch to a quad , keeping everything as it is but for the cpu...
I'd love to hope the new am2+ (or whatever it's called) is for multi-socket mobos only

                            ah right.. cool.

We we will just see what happens later this year

Just reclocking my E6420 to 3.2ghz. Some oddity with this mobo that means if you dont set some voltages manually instead of auto your PCI-E link drops to 1x and causes and 3d accelerated stuff to run like crap.

                            Sorted now
