onxy trees and proxies

How can I attach the opacity mapped leaves to the entire tree mesh to be able to proxy it? "edit mesh" is not available when I choose the tree....so I do not know how to attach these leaves. I have no problem proxying the trees without opacity mapped leaves. can anyone help? Thanks.

Right click, convert to edit mesh.

export the trees from onyxtree as a 3ds then bring it into max then proxy it
