I think its time for vlado to think about some clipmaps. In lightwave you can specify instead of opacity a clipmap which will basicly overlook the polys in the spcified area, kind of like displacement clipping, but for regular geometry. Resulting in a fast render time, and none of the problems you guys are facing.
Well the current IR map is pretty bad for animated objects/mesh, you generally gets lots of flickering and splotches.
There is a new IR method (in the unleased RC's) which is much more suitable for animated objects/mesh.
yeah what daforce said...basicly you calculate your irradience map as usual, then it will interpolate the irradience map between every frame and see how the objects change and try to adopt to it. I think vlado has posted some examples in the announcement section.
