  • How do I do this!?

    Hi all,

A simple but probably v helpful question for me and others.

I have 5 workstations for example, and I want them to all start max with the same default settings that I choose, ie a mat lib full of vray mats with vraycolour applied, all the render settings the way I want in vray, and maybe even a vraysun/sky/cam waiting in the scene ready to use. Whatever I want really, but for every machine to start with it. And if possible, for the file to be located on the server, so it can be edited once for all machines?

Hopefully one of you guys knows a why, I cant find anything on the net about how to.

    Best regards

    Mark

Surely if you just setup a max file with all the settings setup and save it to the network and then add the file to the startup folder windows will boot the file everytime the computer is switched on.

Give it a go? What are your reasons for wanting to setup this up?

      Hi,

I had meant for the max file to start only when you start max, not on startup of windows, but an interesting idea.

The reason I would like this is so when I start a new project, or a noobie here does, then the settings are all there waiting, and it will save time having to put them in each time. There are a lot of settings that are always the same, and just increase the couple for hi res stuff when needed.

      thx

I personaly wouldn't waste too much time worrying about it and just make a shortcut on the desktop of each computer to the file on the network and tell them to double click it to start a new project.

I would also write protect the file on the server to stop accidental overwritting.

          Hi,

Max will load the file called "Maxstart.max" in the scenefolder on every reset. So if you put the file in everybodys scene folder then you should be fine.

          Best regards,

          Dieter

Goodo, but where is the maxstart.max file, i did a search and cant find it.

edit:- Couldn't find it, but saved it in to the scenes folder, and it now works! Altho you have to save out a Medit.mat file if you want the materials to load at reset to.

            Cheers

              From Max help:
maxstart.max: At startup and when you reset the program, 3ds Max looks for this file in the MaxStart folder specified in Configure User Paths > File I/O panel, and if found, loads it. This allows you to specify the default state of the workspace whenever you start or reset the program. For example, if you always use a ground plane, you can make it the default setup by creating one, and then saving it as maxstart.max.
So you could save the file in a network folder and change all machines MaxStart path to point that folder.
