  • q6600 temperature program

    Hi everyone
I was wondering what program you guys use to check the core temps of the processor. Right now i am using core temp and it shows 4 different temps for each core and these temps seem quite high
    core #1: 92C
    core #2: 89c
    core #3: 78C
    core #4: 71C
I don't know what i should conclude from that. I am using the heatsink that came with the Q6600.
    Thanks for any replies.

    geezus thats hot.

Try speed fan and see if its repots similar temps, also check your cpu temp in bios as well.
If they are all similar then its time for you to get some aftermarket cooling.

check the other threads in off topic for suggestions and recommendations.

Ok i will try speed fan as well.
Check the temp in bios is only possible when the machine isn't under full load tho....

      Thanks

Yeah, I should have been more clear.

Basically to make sure that program is accurate, check its idle temp and compare with the bios idle temp, which we assume is accurate. Then you know if those loads temps will be accurate (well mostly.)

Try speed fan anyway, great program.

I would suggest getting an aftermarket cooler (such as the thermalright 120 extreme) and some artic silver 5

          Installed speed fan
          CPU temp reads 65C
          Core 0: 56C
          Core 1:56C
          core 2:56C
          Core 3: 56C
and an AUX: 104C which i don't know what it is :P
The cpu temp with speed fan corrosponds actually with the temp i get in my asus AI Suite.

So any suggestions? Should i get another heat sink and/or another case fan
I have the arctic cooling Silentium T2 pro case

That seems abit more reasonable. Although seems a little too good for the stock heatsink.. *shrugs*

Well there has been reports of the temps being 15c (or so) out depending on what temp monitor you use.
So as long as its fluctuates properly with you put it unload I would just stick with the speed fan temps.
Is the heatsink so hot its untouchable... as at 70-90c you basically wouldnt be able to touch it. I had a small heatsink on my motherboard chipset reach 60c and it would burn if you touch it.

I never use the stock heatsinks.. expect for maybe back on my old P3 1GHZ haha.. so I would naturally say yes get another heatsink, but I guess as long as you have good case flow.. (a few fans) and things dont seem to hot inside. (see above comments) then it might all be ok.

Thanks a lot for your help!!!!
It is my first comp that i built so i am all new to this.
I don't know if the 2 8mm chassis fans are enough too. They say it is but i don't know about that.
Here is a link to the case:

First build hey, fun isnt it
Well there is certainly no *correct* way to do anything really just better ways/things to use.

wow, thats a very "designed" case.

Well if there are purpose made slots for mode cooling then I would fill them up. But it looks like there isnt any.

Potentially 2 80mm may be enough but it depends on their application and what you have in your case.

Just make sure things are not super hot ... i.e. burn if you touch them, and you *should* be ok.

My 2 cases at home, one has 3 120mm's fans and 1 80mm on the cpu heatsink (Antec P182) and the other has 4 120mm's (1 on cpu heatsink) and 2 80mm's (Thermaltake Armour)
                But it really depends.

So check out how hot things are and if there is enough airflow around the hot bits (cpu, ram and video)

Yeah it is fun...i will never buy a finished built comp again..hehe
i think the airflow is not so bad for those little ones.
My case temp is around 37C.
Hard drive doesn't get over 49C either.

Yeah those temps sound pretty reasonable.
So I imagine things will be ok. And maybe just assume those higher temps are out of whack. Probabaly wouldnt hurt to get a better cooler. Maybe you could overclock then and get free performance

Yes i am gonna get the thermaright i hope it fits in the case tho.
                      Overclocking sounds fine to me...

just for the record: speed fan was out for me and core temp was correct.

                              using the same cpu

                              - also i believe the q6600 is only rated to 65c and i seriously doubt it could handle 92c without crashing. so perhaps for your motherboard speed fan is the correct reading.

another thing - anything over 55c is 'unbearably hot' in otherwords you would react to move away from it even though it wont really damage you.

                              92c would actually burn you.

when you apply the thermal grease to the cpu - it should be a very very thin amount, so its 'just not' transparent and as even as possible, id recommend a small spatchula type of tool.
