What is a good OS for a render server? Windows x64 or Vista 64 bit Ultimate?

There are various methods with varying manual intervention needed.

You can do Unattended install CDs for example. I'd suggest googling for unattended installs and you'll get a lot of resources for both local unattendet uinstalls and network installs.
