Pity the opteron's got smashed by the core2duo's and quads

I dont think an 18% increase is going to be enough.

i so hoped they would give the xeon's a run for their money, but maybe later when they ramp up the frequency.....here's hoping

fixed the link - the Barcelona is pretty much equal to the lntels now clock for clock

the problem is the clocks are not as high. but that should be fixed by the end of the year hopefully.

I didn't want to make a new thread.I hope also that i am not bothering you. I am thinking to buy a render machine and i am wondering what would you say about the 3 options for CPU guys:

            1.Intel Core2 Extreme QX6800 4x 2,936GHz 64Bit SKT775 boxed
            2.Intel Xeon DP X5355 4x 2,66GHz 4MB LGA771 box passiv 2HE
            3. 2 pieces of Intel Core2 Quad Q6700 4x 2,66GHz 64Bit SKT775 boxed

Thanks in Advance to all of you.

Personally cost wise I feel a Q6600 is the best option & maybe build a couple of these.

Also with two machines when do larger renders you can stop one rendering and use it to work on at any point but a dual xeon would be tied up and you would be more limited on using it to work with while rendering?

option 3 (means building 2 machines)

                alot more rendering power.

Assuming the total price of each option is similar.

Mmmm. Well from my experience on test renders so far, one main big machine means LC and IRMaps are calculated much faster. Also, by the time the other machines load up all the files, the main has nearly completed the scene.

                  DR isn't completely reliable.

Rather than the noisy Intel fan heatsinks do you think you could sqeeze two of these in as they are deadly silent I have one on my Q6600
                    http://www.arctic-cooling.com/cpu2.php?idx=79
I believe my socket type is 771 so I guess the answer would be no. I've had problems trying to find a replacement CPU fan for these boards.

2 Q6600 machines would work out cheaper I reckon and they overclock really well due to consumer level boards.
I've got quite a few machines. I really like having an overpowered main more than anything else at this point.

Yeah I think the Q6600 are really worth the cost at the moment.
They are a very good price and I would go with this if I didn't have the spare cash. from an individual processor standpoint, I think the QX series are probably more powerful than a single Opteron.

Looks like 3dsmax on the quad Barcelona is 18% faster clock for clock than a dual Opteron (+ dual core) machine.
On some benches - otherwise this statement is false. They also said they were rushed over the weekend to get details out. But overall the new Barcelonas still didn't match the higher end Opterons.

#1 is a much better option than a single #2 from a price standpoint. It might even be faster. Problem with #3 is that I don't think there's a motherboard that supports two/dual QX series. I could be wrong.

You wont be able to work with Vray unless you have more than one license. You could continue to model. From the sounds of it however, you already have another machine. As for test renders, most of mine are under a minute. Fact is you probably won't be switching that often unless its a final rendering or large animation.

Jujubee I know that they are socket 771 but the top of the cpu looks the same as the 775 so that was my thinking behind that but prob totally wrong.
