    Short for Giga-Flops where :

    FLOPS = FLOatingPointoperationsPerSecond
    Giga = Million.

    so 1 GFlops = 1 Billion Floating Point operations a second

    Regards,
    Thorsten

          I may be wrong but I think that beowolf cluster is little out of date - 1 dual quad xeon easily outpaces it, http://www.intel.com/performance/server/xeon/hpcapp.htm. Build it with 5345's instead of the 5355's and you could do it for about $2000 and it'll have better price/performance and power/gflop ratios . Isn't progress great .

            A simple Core 2 Duo has the same power.

            Last month, I visited this beast:

            http://www.top500.org/system/8237

            60 TFLOPS

            In teapots we trust.

              Really? Maybe a Core 2 quad but I'd be suprised if if a duo could reach that level.

              The tour of that monster looks cool though.

                  Yeah, but that had two dual core xeon's so one is basically 19. Still pretty damn impressive though and pretty close to the 26 on the cluster. An overclocked core 2 duo could probably give it a run for the money though without too much trouble so your probably right that a core 2 duo has the same power.
