  • Hardware... Intel Core 2 Quad Extreme Q6700 or 2xXeon X5355?

    Hi

What would You recommend to buy for 3dsmax, vray, brazil as a workstation and also a server for a render farm,,,

Go ahead for 2 x Xeon Quad core X5355 or Intel Core 2 Quad Extreme?
Is that the speed incremental and other things are worth for go into new Xeon ?
(I have older 2xdualCore Xeons 5130A already and I'm very happy with it).

    Is it really worth ?

    Cheers

not really worth it - two machines with a single cpu works out to be a lot cheaper than one machine with two cpu's - then you can just use DR.

Since I have both, and since the dual Quad 5355 is relatively cheaper then the Q6700, I can only say that the first one is more breathtaking to work with. Especially on large jobs. The downside is, that IF you decide to throw large jobs at it you need at least 16GB RAM. But then you can do anything with it. I always prefer the most powerfull machines to work with, even if you don't have a renderfarm.

Also depends on how much time you spend calcing LC and IRmaps. Dual quad will be much faster. But I don' think it's cheaper than a Qx6700.
