There's a very good dvd called "character modelling for production".
It's 3ds max based, and it's about a human male figure.
I guess from there you could evince whatever is your need.

thats the thing. i know how to do humans. its articulated snouts i need to learn. they are really easy in 2d animation since there is no limit to your mesh in 2d since there is no mesh

I guess what you want is a cat or a dog modelling tutorial.

Then its a matter of squishing the snout a little to suit.

not really a tutorial, but if I were modeling him I'd go for a layout of geometry something like this:

It's not a great example, but I just quickly run around & adapted a character I worked on a while ago.

          I hope it helps!

            The edgeloops are correct imo.
They run around the snout as they do around a human's mouth.
That should allow for speech and deformation easily.

Is the plural "mongooses" or "mongeese"?

                      haha pretty cool elf.

He looks rather shift with those rectangle eyes.

i think the cheeks of the reference image look a lot bigger and more pronounced than your 3d model.
are you actually creating that charachter, or somethign similar?
                          looking good so far
