  • Max 9 and Quadro fx 4500

Not a Vray issue, just MAx. Running the fx 4500 using Direct x 9 or even the max extreame I'm having viewport issues. Objects in the scene won't redraw. It will do it 100% of the time in either mode when the computer gets locked. When I log back on the objects either don't redraw and disapear or the whole viewport looks like the colors are all smudged with lines all over. I read somewhere in the Max forum of someone having the same problem. They turned off Hyper-threading and it fixed it. It didnt work for me. The only graphics option that works for me is Open GL.

    Any ideas?

well quadros are open gl cards. So you cant expect anything else from them. Unfortinantly for max, the direct x support is much greater. So I would suggest to try some direct x card, like 8800 gtx.

thats probably me having the problem I haven't run across anyone else really that has it. We're getting it steady on Quadro3000SL's run on AGP. in recent workstation purchases we've gone with the cheaper (and faster) 8800's and so far they've been great. wire frame performance is slightly lacking on huge models, but the shaded views are lightning fast.

I haven't found any real way to reliably reproduce the effect. I haven't found any sort of answer for fixing it either. unscientifically it appears to happen more so when there are VrayProxy's in the scene. the issue also seems to appear if i try and use one of my old quadro900 or 980's that i have left over from past stations

I have the blanking after locking happening on 1 workstation, and the crazy redraw lines while panning/zooming on 4 machines.

pretty crappy for the guys stuck working on them

I have a Quadro 4500 as well (the other options on the MacPro just sucked at the time)...

I just use Direct3D and OpenGL, switching as needed by the scene. Unfortunately Autodesk is drinking the MS koolaide so Direct3D is the best option in Max. OpenGL is still better for certain kinds of scenes (like ones with really high object counts). But I have yet to have success with any version of Maxtreme since 3DSMax 4. NVidia doesn't even keep it up to date and working with their own drivers, let alone Max.

and to make things worse, 8800's are super terrible with maya. Just fricking redicules. Since all maya versions up to now were open gl strictly. So quadros are much better for maya. But they also cost a tonn more.

Regarding the max Direct3D geometry disappearing after you lock/unlock your computer, I received a plugin file from autodesk that fixes this. the standard discalimer applies as it's not techincally supported, etc. but several people on the autodesk forums (including myself) say that it resolves that specific issue.

Download the zippped plugin file from my website at this link: http://www.jcanimator.com/WakeUpDX.zip

Put the .gup file found in the zip in your stdplugs folder for max9 (this file doesn't work for max8, and I don't have a build for max8 either) and then restart Max. Afterwards you should be able to lock/unlock without experiencing display issues.

FYI - The reason this occurs is due to the "use cached meshes" option for the direct3d settings, it stores the geometry on the videocard and that information is lost and not properly updated once your computer goes to lock mode. My understanding of what this plugin does is waits for that situation to occur and properly updates the information on the videocard.

Thanks for the responce. That fixed it! I am having another problem though. It doesnt want to keep the software lights on in the viewports. If I set it to two lights it looks good until I change viewports or select an object. then the scene (especially light colored objects like white walls) get overly blown out and bright when displayed in the viewport. Anybody know what causes that?
