  • lost 3ds max windows... HEADACHE

I've been moving a scene between systems with different monitor setups... now i don't see my light lister, and more importantly my render dialog. Starting max all over again doesn't help, and i can't find the ini file in max 9 which i remember doing in one of the older versions.

    Any help?

Look in this folder: ...\Autodesk\3ds Max 9\ui and try renaming the DefaultUI.ui or DefaultUI.CUI. See if max will create a new on one start up.

or delete 3dsmax.ini, the new one will be created upon max start.

or press a shortcut key or button that calls the missing window, then press

(alt+space) --> (m) --> (any arrow key) the window will then be stuck to the mouse pointer, just move it around till it comes back on the screen (if you remember where it was then just move it over.

Also somebody wrote an exe (or script?) that moves all the windows back to the main monitor, I don't remember what it is called or who wrote but I believe I have it on my work computer, I'll try to remember to look for it.

Haha, thats great. I always had to open the .ini file, scratch my head for a few minutes looking for the right menu, reset the coords....but both of your suggestions sound awesome compared to that.

Mmm thanks. I was pulling out my hairs a couple weeks ago trying to figure that out.

Where is it? I looked for it and couldn't find it. The Max 9 installer creates folder structures in My Documents and in Program Files. I didn't see it in either of those places.

You can try to search for it somewhere in the (hidden) Application Data folder of your user profile in the (also hidden) Documents and Settings folder on Windows XP (called Users on Vista).

I managed to reset the position of the render dialog by editing the position in the ini file, the ini file is located behind God's back in local settings, app\data\ adesk\max.

I didn't find th elightlister though, so i'll try some of these solutions when i get to the machine.

Deleting the ini file still doesn't bring my lightlister back

Can't move it either because as soon as i click somewhere with the crosshair cursor, it dissapears.
