whats the best way to go from, rhino (nurbs) over to max, and then make it lowpoly? (the object is a offshore ship)

    1) export obj (poly mesh) out of rhino (make sure you got the surfaces on layers according to material type).

    max angle = between 20-25
    max aspect ratio = 20
    min edge length = 0.1mm
max dist edge to surf = 0.5mm

Those settings will give you a pretty good detailed mesh.

    2) import into max.

    3) run polycruncher to optimise mesh (can usually reduce poly count by 60% without drop in quality.

    Hope that helps.

        Sorry to re-light this thread....

What type of work do you use these settings with? I.e - Architecture, product design, etc?

I've been asked a lot recently about how to import architects models from Rhino, and I've never really settled on a technique. and minimum edge length 0.1mm sounds a pretty tight tolerance ...especially when architects seem to work on tolerances around +/-10m

Anyone else have any tips on rhino to max import?

Is the Polycruncher plugin worth getting?

Absolutely NPower Rhino-to-Max is the way to go. It opens the Rhino file as a native Brep. It also creates a mesh at render time so that each poly is max 1/2 pixel which is exactly what you always want. David Gill is very helpful there as well.
