we ran into crashes when pre-calculating LC/IR on 64 bit machines and then trying to render with that solution on 32 bit machines....instant crash. The solution was to install 32bit max on 64 machines, then run solutions. of course this was discovered in the middle of a deadline

Also, got spoiled with the 64 bit machines ability to handle larger memory, then could not even open some files on 32bit machines kind of like using a Ferrari then stepping into a diesel VW rabbit. be careful

thanks. I'm asking for the x64 media right now. I'll try it out on one farm machine. I'll try rendering every job on that machine as well to see if there are differences, crashes, and if there are speed increases for average render times. That'll give us a good reason to switch/not.

I just found out also that our global IT is testing 64bit and they are going to let me get in on the testing as well. The machines they are testing for it are sound pretty damn nice also, if I'm hearing the rumors correctly. Sounded like 8gigs, dual quad core. I like the sound of that. Hopefully rumors are correct.

X64 is waay faster for us on any file that uses more than the RAM a 32 can access, which is pretty much all of our files. We run in 6-7 gig files all the time and they are 10 times faster on our 8 gig units. Depends on how large you files are, small files won't show much of a difference. CPU is CPU, it's when you run out of RAM and Crash or page that you see major benefits in 64 bits....
