those dickmann set images are interesting - kinda unfortunate name there..

but what is odd is that a friend of mine does architectural engravings for a living (fine art prints of buildings) and these ultra tweaked images remind me a lot of his prints - its almost as if a precision artist does his own mental tone mapppings to create something like these hyper realistic illusions

(my friend spends about three months on a single image so way different timescale)

From what I remember of this, you probably need more than 2 exposures to get the correct look.

Here is something that may be worthwhile if you were interested in doing this sort of thing alot: http://www.hdrsoft.com/

Also...why couldn't one simply use the blending modes in Photoshop to get similar(better?) results?

There are a few free tone mapping softwares available recently, I'll find the links when I have a moment.

It just occurred to me that this sort of thing is probably the "special camera technology" that it's rumored they're using on the new Speed Racer movie. I've heard things like "everything is in focus" and "they're doing some sort of frame layering". The colors in the trailer are super saturaturated so I bet exposure blending is what's really going on.

Kind of reminds me of some of the shots here:

Some work better than others for me...
