It does work on top of the max layer system yes, so ppl without it dont loose layers. It does a whole lot of stuff in the current version like wire coloring, alternate materials and much much much more. I really like it :

yes, i just tried it on 2009 x64 service packs and creativity suite, works just fine!
apparently theres an newer/better(?) version of theOnion called onion 2 in blurs latest pack, but i have not been able to make it work in x64, please post if anyone has.
