  • 3dsmax Snap settings

    Hello people,

a quick question wich i cannot solve, perhaps any1 has some ideas.
i'm working on a large project with a very large acad drawings plans imported. although the display is very fast when rotating and such.

but when i try i create a spline and switch on the snap, man it gets very slow. i have tried some different snap settings but nothing seems to help. perhaps any1 has some info on how to set these settings??

    thanks in advance,

make sure the CAD file you import is very "clean." also, ACAD blocks seem to really be a PITA. I think there are lots of threads here about dealing with AutoCAD dwgs. Sorry I can't link them, but I think I've also seen some scripts for cleaning up dwgs and sketchup files...good luck

      Hi

try switching to openGL when working with splines, i find it does help in these circumstances...

Not really a fix but hopefully a workaround ..

This happens to me frequently with large drawings such as site surveys or landscape plans all drawn with spline objects.. yuck. My card does not support openGL in max so its not an option.

My trick is simply to isolate the areas I need to focus on and hide the rest.

If you have a lot of objects MAX is going to suffer whenever you try to select something.

It's better to have one object with 100 000 verts than 1000 objects with 100 verts. Max shell go faster through database.

In other words attach as much as you can, weld verteces and reduce interpolation.

              Hope this might help

Just had the same thing myself.......................I deleted all unrequired geometry from the ACAD file, especially arcs. eg delete windows from openings on elevations, just keep one of each type for reference.

                Worked like a charm!

Deleting unrequired acad stuff helps indeed. but sometimes this is a little hard to do
and large city block plans remain heavy hehe

i wonder if there are some acad guru's here would could share some tips.

                  For example:
                  - is there something like "select by color" just as in max?
                  - is there a way to remove all geometry and leaving splines intact in acad?
                  - is there a way to selecy heavy blocks?
                  - is there something wich can remove all double/overlapping splines in acad?

and other acad idea are very welcome

"QSELECT" - by changing the drop down lists you can filter by just about anything.
                    - is there a way to remove all geometry and leaving splines intact in acad?
Again, "QSELECT". There's no generic 'geometry' category like in max but by successively going through solids, regions, etc. you should be able to remove everything you need.
                    - is there a way to selecy heavy blocks?
                    Not that I know of.
                    - is there something wich can remove all double/overlapping splines in acad?
It's part of the express tools, under Express-->Modify-->Delete duplicate objects. In can be slow though and save before running.

I'm no Acad guru but I have cleaned a lot of cad.

I like to us the "turn off layer" command in the express tools to quickly turn off the layers I do not need. Then copy the remaining linework and paste it into a new file to get rid of all the hidden and frozen stuff. In the new file typing "Overkill" in the command line will start a routine that tries to delete any doubled up lines.

One of the many reasons we do most of our architectural modelling in ADT. No help to you, I know, but ADT modelling is far more accurate and clean in my opinion.
                        Kind Regards,

if you have atached the cad file to max just click "bind" in file link manager and your max file will run faster.
