  • Network question

Hey everyone. Thought I'd ask some profs here. I have two machines setup via crossover cable. Before I used to have them both running winxp x32 bit and the network worked fine, i.e. one machine could see the other and vise-versa.
Now I have installed winxp x64 on the second machine and setup the network. Now my main machine can see and access my 64 bit machine, but the 64 bit machine cant access the 32 bit machine back. It can ping it, but it does not show any machines in its networking. It doesnt see itself nor the other box.
So when I do renderings, it cant write images to its own drive via network path.
    Im missing something?

I might also add that when I try to create workgroup to connecto to my existing one it creates the workgroup, but after reboot the workgroup does not showup..

    1) make sure Directory sharing is enabled for a folder/drive and set permissions to 'all'.

    2) There's a driver which ships with x64 which has to be installed on 32 bit machines to allow communication. I believe you can also get the driver off of the windows update site.

    3) The other issue it could be is permissions. If you're logging on one machine such as 'Administrator' with a password and trying to log onto the other machine as 'User' with a different password sometimes this wont work. I've had to configure all my machines as the same username and password - seems to have made life easier.

I suppose this is one area that Windows Server has home networking beat.

    4) Also check 'simple file sharing' under a regular directory window at the top: 'tools\folder options\view\use simple file sharing' and see if that is enabled. Try clicking that off and see if you get any better results.

    5) Check to see if Windows Firewall or any other Firewall is blocking your machine.

If none of these steps does the trick (or later on you experience disconnections), I would suggest assigning your comps a Static IP Address - but we can talk about that later if necessary.

Yeah I was going to suggest IP address issues. perhaps. But odd how one machine can talk to the other but then not the other way.

Just make sure all your IP's are setup properly. And make sure their on the same workgroup as well.

And as juju said make sure both machines are set to use simple sharing.. thats genearlly the easiest for all out access.

actually the problem was a bad winxp install. It told me that it failed to copy some files over during install.
I have gotten a corporate copy and it worked like a charm.
          Thanks guys.

glad you got it sorted. I was going to say that back in the days before winxp whenever I had this kind of problem I would just add netbios ontop of TCP IP
this worked most of the times.
            Kind Regards,
