    Hi All,

I am on latest max9, etc, etc, XP64
    latest official vray build...

simple scene, editing poly and chose 5 edges to chamfer. max grunted a bit, than the shitty error message and then recover failed message. Now if I try to open the scene, or even previous versions of the max file, masx hangs, with the "loading" message displayed at the bottom.
WTF?!?! I do this type of edit quite often...so what gives?
Has anyone had this or similar problem?

I've tried, starting a new scene, merging, etc.
Also switched between D3D and OpenGL, no difference....
Also tried deletiing max.ini but no difference!
I am so mad right now, it's hard to type and my anger tank is really filling up quickly! Sorry to rant, hope you understand, if this doesn't work out, a whole day or more is lost!

    Thanks
    JR

Have you restarted your computer since the error? Maybe it's just my imagination, but it seems that after some errors max gets slower and only a restart will fix it.

      Thanks Derek,

Yes, that was the second thing I did.
I'm running out of things to try that I know of and am trying to prepare
myself for doing a days work over again... really makes me glad to have spent the big bucks to by such a shoddy piece of software. i mean, it can do amazing things, but WTF, it totally dies while performing something barely more demanding than an AutoCAD command. Sorry, rant over, really.

Yeah, I figured you had already tried restarting. Worth a shot.

Is max broken for any scene now, or just that one?
If its just that one, try merging it into a new scene piece by piece. If you want, you can send it my way I'll take a look at it.

          It's just this scene,
I wish I could send it, but can't (you understand?)
Plus, it's about 40MB now and I can't slim it down due to not being able to open it, lol.
I'm just trying to merge things in one at a time to isolate the problem(s.)
Going to reboot after each crash, too, so I might be at this awhile...

P.S. Please give my regards to Shaun and Stefan from Maine!

You found the error? What type of geometry was it?

Well, I kept trying the merging technique, and I narrowed the problem geometry down to piece of the site's lawn. Odd thing is, that I haven't touched the lawns since max file iteration 60 (currently at iteration 95 about 3 days) So, apparently it wasn't the editable poly edge chamfer at all! Now, I'm really scared as I still have no clue why this even happened!?

The lawn part that was offensive was just a simple spline turned into an editable poly. There are 4 others in the scene created the same way, with the same material and a simple vray displacement mod. All the other ones are fine, so, thanks for the help, and I'm still bothered. Might call Autodesk to see what they have to say about it...

                  Best regards,
                  JR

                    Glad it worked

We had to use that merging technique on a scene, and if I remember correctly, the offending geometry was also not recently edited. It seems that something can just get corrupted beyond repair. That scene didn't do it again, so hopefully yours won't either.

Thanks, I'm glad i only lost hours rather than days.
Interesting you had a similar thing with non-recently edited geo...

                      Best regards,
