  • Which order to install software on new pc?

    Hi All

I saw a list somewhere I think on either Intel or Microsoft's website where they recommend you install software in a certain order. I can't remember the order or exactly where I saw this list. Anybody know where I can find it again?

    Kind Regards,
    Morne

I know Autodesk provides a white paper on which order to install their products.

thanks Bobby. This list is very old it seems. But since we're on the subject of old software. It just so happens I have an old AutoCAD. So is it safe to say I should Install my old AutoCAD before 3ds Max 2009?

ok so far I found this:

You should install the OS 1st (obviously) and then any service packs for it.
Then you should install your motherboards chipset files before any other drivers or software. I'm still searching for when to install the antivirus and firewall ie before programs or after...
              anybody?

In general it really doesn't matter that much unless the programs are dependent on each other. (install max before installing max plugins for instance) firewall program is more difficult. On one hand you might want to wait with installing it until you've got the OS set up with all windows updates and drivers, but on the other hand the sooner you get it installed the better. but on the other hand ... oh wait... I've got three hands.
Anti-virus should be installed when everything else is working. You might want to consider not installing it at all even. They are often more trouble then they are worth and can seriously decrease your computer's performance. If you have a proper firewall and you don't go to bad websites, or open bad emails in bad email programs you'll be fine. You can still use online scanners to check individual files you're unsure of and to do full system checks whenever you feel like it.
                Here's the order I use:
Install OS (only connect to the net to activate. Don't stay connected after that) Install all drivers you have as well as any other system upgrades. then install the firewall. now connect to the net and use windows update.
A bit of planning is never a bad thing. If you download the updates you will need ahead of time you can install as much as possible before starting to going online at all. Windows Update updates can be downloaded as redistributable files that you can save to the computer or a disc until you need them.
If you do prepare, I'd use this order:
Install OS, Install chipset drivers, Install Service Pack, Install other drivers, install firewall, connect to the net and use windows update, if you were online a lot before installing the firewall, use an online virus scanner to check your computer, Install programs.
